7 Warning Signs Your Caravan Wheel Bearings Need Servicing

A caravan wheel bearing almost never fails without warning. The catch is where the warning turns up: behind a wheel you never look at, on a part of the van you can't hear over the tow vehicle, at the one spot on your rig that carries a heavy load for hours at highway speed and then sits ignored in the driveway for months. A problem that started with a beach crossing in April can quietly wait until your first long trip in July to make itself known.

So by the time a bearing actually lets go, it's usually been dropping hints for a while. Here are the seven signs a caravan wheel bearing is worn or on its way out, roughly in the order they show up, and how to check each one yourself in the driveway or at a rest stop. Some are early and easy to act on. A couple only appear once the damage is done. 1. A hum, growl or grinding that changes with speed

This is the classic first symptom, and it moves through stages. Early on it's a faint hum from one wheel that rises with road speed. Grinding at low speed means the damage is already well advanced.

How to check it: on a quiet road, note whether the noise rises with speed and changes when you steer left versus right. A growl that worsens turning one way often points to the bearing on the opposite side, because your weight has shifted onto it. Treat it as a hint, not a diagnosis. 2. A hub that's hotter than the others after a drive

Friction makes heat, and a failing bearing makes more friction. A hub that's noticeably hotter than the others after a run is one of the earliest useful signs you can catch, and you need no tools to spot it.

How to check it: after towing 15 minutes or so, pull over and carefully hold the back of your hand near each hub, then on it. If you can't hold your hand on a hub for a few seconds, it's running hotter than it should. The reliable trick is comparison: one hub markedly hotter than the rest on the same van is the red flag, far more than any exact number. A cheap infrared thermometer makes it easy. 3. Play or wobble when you rock the wheel

How to check it (the rock test): on firm, level ground, chock the wheels staying down, then jack the axle until the tyre is clear. Put an axle stand under the chassis before you go near the wheel, never trust the jack alone. Grab the tyre at 12 and 6 o'clock and rock it in and out, then at 3 and 9 o'clock. A clunk, a click, or movement you can clearly see or feel is a fail. A barely perceptible amount (thousandths of an inch on a tapered-roller setup) can be normal. One caution: zero movement isn't automatically good either, an over-tightened bearing runs hot, so it's worth getting right rather than just cranking the nut up.

4. Roughness when you spin the wheel by hand

While the wheel is jacked up for the rock test, do this one too. It takes ten seconds and it's one of the clearest tells there is.

How to check it: spin the raised wheel firmly by hand and listen and feel. A good bearing spins freely, quietly and smoothly. A bad one feels gritty or notchy, or you'll hear a faint grinding. The servicing reality: if you can feel roughness by hand, that bearing is past a re-grease. It needs replacing.

5. Grease thrown around the inside of the wheel

Look behind the wheel. Grease smeared across the brake backing plate, drum, inner rim or tyre sidewall means the inner grease seal has failed. That's a problem twice over: grease is escaping, and water and grit are now getting in to contaminate what's left.

How to check it: inspect the back of the hub and inside of the rim for slung or weeping grease, and check the dust cap for grease pushed past the seal. One honest caveat, because it trips people up: grease around the hub can also come from over-packing, where too much grease churns, heats and purges past the seal. Either way it's worth investigating, but a clearly failed seal letting grit in is the one that ruins a bearing.

6. Vibration through the floor or a wobble through the tow

A loose or worn bearing lets the wheel run slightly off its true line, and that shows up as a vibration that grows with speed. On a caravan it can travel back through the coupling as a shudder through the tow vehicle's floor or seat.

How to check it: note whether a vibration builds as you speed up and whether it arrives alongside any of the noises above. Vibration on its own has other causes, an unbalanced tyre, a buckled rim, worn suspension, so it's most telling when it comes with a growl or a hot hub. That combination points hard at a bearing.

7. A blued or discoloured hub, the one you never want to see

If the steel of the hub, spindle or bearing races has turned blue, purple, brown or straw-yellow, it has been cooked. That heat-tinting is the signature of a bearing already badly overheated, usually with pitting or scoring on the rollers.

How to check it: you'll generally only see this at service time, once the dust cap and hub come off, so it's more "what your mechanic finds" than a roadside check. If it shows up, the bearing is replaced, not repacked. It's the late-stage sign the earlier ones were trying to warn you about.

One more worth a glance: uneven or scalloped (cupped) tyre wear can occasionally trace back to bearing play, but it far more often comes from wheel balance, a bent rim or worn shocks, so treat it as a prompt to check the rest of this list, not proof on its own.

What to do if you spot one of these

If you pick up a growl, a hub much hotter than its mates, obvious play, or grease thrown around the hub, stop towing on that bearing and get it inspected before you go further.
