Does Your 4WD Have Factory TPMS? HiLux, Ranger, Prado, LandCruiser and MU-X

Fitment verified against manufacturer specification sheets, August 2026.

Two blokes park next to each other at a servo outside Roma. One drives a Ford Ranger XLT. The other drives a LandCruiser 300 Sahara that cost nearly twice as much. The Ranger has tyre pressure monitoring built in. The LandCruiser doesn't have it on any grade.

That is not a mistake in the spec sheets. It is how factory tyre pressure monitoring works in Australia, and almost nobody explains it, because the information is scattered across four manufacturer websites that don't even use the same words for the same feature.

So we went and assembled it. Below is a grade-by-grade breakdown of factory TPMS across the five vehicles that do most of Australia's towing and touring: the Toyota HiLux, Ford Ranger, Toyota Prado, Toyota LandCruiser and Isuzu MU-X. Then we get into the part that matters more than the fitment table, which is what these systems don't do once you hook up a van or let your tyres down for sand.

The short answer: which 4WDs have factory TPMS in Australia

Here is the whole picture in one table.

The short version, vehicle by vehicle:

The Toyota HiLux WorkMate does not have factory tyre pressure monitoring. Every new-generation HiLux from SR grade up does. No HiLux built between 2015 and 2025 has it at all.

The Ford Ranger XL, XLS and Black Edition do not have factory tyre pressure monitoring. The XLT and every grade above it does.

The Toyota Prado GX and GXL do not have tyre pressure monitoring. The VX and Kakadu do, and the Altitude gained it from around September 2025 production.

The Toyota LandCruiser 300 Series is not listed with tyre pressure monitoring on any Australian grade. Neither is the 70 Series.

The Isuzu MU-X LS-M does not have tyre pressure monitoring. The LS-U, LS-T and X-TERRAIN do, and the MU-X system reports both pressure and temperature for each wheel.

Notice what doesn't predict fitment. Price doesn't. A $33,990 HiLux SR has it and a $100,000-plus LandCruiser Sahara doesn't. Wheel material doesn't either: the Ranger Black Edition rolls on alloys with no TPMS, while the MU-X LS-M has alloys and misses out too.

The only thing that predicts it is the grade badge. So check that, not the one on the tailgate.

Why factory TPMS in Australia is a trim-level lottery

Here is the reason none of this is consistent: Australia doesn't require tyre pressure monitoring on anything.

There is no Australian Design Rule covering TPMS. The main tyre-related ADRs are ADR 23 (passenger car tyres), ADR 24 (tyre and rim selection), ADR 71 (temporary use spare tyres), ADR 95 (installation of tyres) and ADR 96 (commercial vehicle tyres). None of them mention pressure monitoring. ADR 95/00, which adopts UN Regulation 142 and has applied to new models since 1 July 2019, states plainly that it does not apply to tyre pressure monitoring system installation.

The Department of Infrastructure's most recent public position on this, reported by Heavy Vehicle Industry Australia in November 2023, is that the federal government "does not set any technical requirements for TPMS and does not mandate their fitment to any vehicles." A consultation paper went to the Vehicle Standards Consultative Committee in September 2023. No outcome has been published since, and nothing in the 2025 or 2026 ADR amendment packages touches it. So don't hold your breath.

Now compare that with everywhere else.

In the United States, TPMS has been mandatory on every new light vehicle of 4,536 kg or less, excluding those with dual wheels on an axle, since 1 September 2007, under FMVSS 138 and the TREAD Act. NHTSA's rule requires the vehicle to warn the driver when a tyre falls 25% or more below the recommended cold pressure.

In the European Union, passenger cars have needed it since 1 November 2014 under Regulation (EC) 661/2009. Regulation (EU) 2019/2144 later extended the requirement to buses and heavy trucks and to trailers over 3.5 tonnes, applying to all new registrations from July 2024, with the technical standard set by UN ECE Regulation 141. Worth noting for anyone who assumes Europe has this covered: ordinary touring caravans sit below that 3.5 tonne threshold and are not included.

In the United Kingdom, it goes further. A tyre pressure monitoring system that is "malfunctioning or obviously not working" is a Major defect in the DVSA's MOT inspection manual for cars first used from 1 January 2012. In Britain you fail your roadworthy for a broken TPMS. In Australia you are not required to have one in the first place.

Which brings us to why some Australian vehicles have it anyway. As CHOICE put it, many vehicles sold here have factory TPMS "as a result of legislation already in place in the US and Europe." That guide was last updated in November 2021, and the pattern has held since. The sensors and software are already engineered into the global platform. So the feature turns up in Australia not because anyone required it, but because deleting it from every build would cost more than leaving it in on the higher grades.

And that is exactly why the base trims lose it. With no legal floor, TPMS becomes a line item on a features list, something to hold back so the next grade up looks better value. The workhorse variants get stripped. Which is a strange way to allocate a safety feature, given a WorkMate HiLux is more likely to be carrying a tonne of gear down a corrugated road than an SR5 is.

Toyota HiLux

Toyota Australia's new-generation HiLux arrived in showrooms in December 2025, and it brought tyre pressure monitoring with it for the first time.

Which HiLux grades have it

Toyota's own launch release is unambiguous about where the feature starts. Listing the SR grade's additional equipment over the WorkMate, it says: "Extra safety equipment on SR includes tyre pressure monitoring and a panoramic view monitor."

Toyota Australia's specification table backs that up. The tyre pressure monitoring row is marked on the SR, SR5, SR5+, Rogue and Rugged X, and blank on the WorkMate. CarExpert, Drive, carsales and CarsGuide all report the same boundary.

One nuance worth knowing before you order: the marks in Toyota's spec table sit against the 4x4 grades. If you are buying a 4x2, read the current sheet for your exact build rather than assuming the SR badge carries the feature across both drivetrains.

If you own a HiLux built between 2015 and 2025

You don't have it. Not on the WorkMate, not on the SR, not on the SR5, not even on the Rogue or the GR Sport.

That covers the entire eighth-generation GUN-series run. Australia bought 51,297 HiLuxes in 2025 alone, making it the country's third-best-selling vehicle behind the Ranger and the RAV4, and that was the last model year before the feature arrived. Add up a decade of those and you have several hundred thousand utes on Australian roads with no pressure monitoring of any kind.

There is a neat piece of supporting evidence for this. Toyota has sold a Genuine Accessory tyre pressure monitoring kit for older HiLux models, listed at $556.48 and now out of stock. Dealers don't stock accessory TPMS for vehicles that already have it from the factory.

What it monitors, and what we can't confirm

Here we have to be honest about the limits of what's published.

A 4X4 Australia road test of the 2026 SR5 by Dave Morley, published in February 2026, reports that the system "includes the spare tyre." That would be genuinely useful. It is also the only source we could find making the claim, and no Toyota document confirms it.

There is a reason for caution. The SR5 carries a full-size alloy spare that matches its road wheels, so a fifth sensor is at least plausible. The SR carries a full-size steel spare. If a spare sensor exists, it probably doesn't span the range. Check your own vehicle before you rely on it.

Ford Ranger

The Ranger has been Australia's best-selling vehicle three years running, with 56,555 sold in 2025, more than five thousand ahead of the HiLux. It is also the vehicle whose manufacturer has been most candid about what its TPMS can't do.

Which Ranger grades have it

On the Next-Gen Ranger, sold here since 2022, tyre pressure monitoring starts at the XLT. The XL, XLS and Black Edition go without.

The Black Edition is the one that catches people out. It rolls on 17-inch alloys and looks like a higher grade, and RedBook-derived specification data confirms it has no tyre pressure monitoring listed. The XLT, on the same 17-inch alloy size, does. If you were using wheels as a shortcut for guessing fitment, stop.

One housekeeping note: Ford discontinued the Sport grade in the MY26.5 update, so it appears in this generation's used stock rather than the current showroom line-up.

For the earlier PX3 Ranger sold from 2018 to 2022, tyre pressure monitoring appeared in the XLT and Wildtrak standard equipment at the 2019 launch. We verified that launch specification only, so the special editions and later model years of that generation are worth checking individually.

What Ford's own documentation says

Ford Australia publishes a support page explaining how the Ranger's system works, and it contains the two most useful sentences any manufacturer has written on this subject.

The first describes the hardware: "Each wheel is fitted with a sensor that, when your vehicle is on, reports the tyre pressure to the car's computer." That confirms a direct system reading actual pressure, rather than an indirect one inferring it from wheel speed.

The second is the one worth reading twice: "If you have your spare wheel fitted, or there is an issue with any of the sensors, the indicator light... will flash on start-up, before remaining illuminated whilst the vehicle is on."

Read that again. Ford is telling you that the moment you fit your spare, the system stops being useful and starts nagging. You get a permanent warning light and no pressure reading for the wheel you just fitted, at precisely the moment you are running on an unfamiliar tyre a long way from a tyre shop.

And then Ford adds the line that really settles the argument: "The TPMS is not a substitute for manually checking tyre pressures."

That is the manufacturer, in its own support documentation, telling you the system doesn't do the whole job.

The trailer question

Ford does build a factory trailer TPMS kit. It sells it in North America, it includes four sensors, it supports up to twelve, and it requires a base trailer harness fitted to the vehicle first.

The compatible vehicle list covers models like the Bronco and Maverick. The Ranger isn't on it, and no equivalent kit is listed for the Australian Ranger. So the capability exists inside Ford. It just isn't available to you here.

Toyota Prado

The Prado sold 26,106 units in Australia in 2025, sixth overall. It is also where the terminology problem bites hardest.

Why you won't find "TPMS" on the spec sheet

Search Toyota Australia's Prado specifications for "TPMS" and you will find nothing. Search for "tyre pressure monitoring" and you will also find nothing.

The feature is there. Toyota just calls it something else: "Tyre Inflation Pressure Warning."

That is the exact string on Toyota Australia's Prado specification page, which states the information is accurate as at June 2026. Same manufacturer, same market, different name from the one Toyota uses on the HiLux spec sheet. If you have ever gone looking for this answer and come away thinking your Prado doesn't have it, this is probably why.

Which Prado grades have it

Toyota lists Tyre Inflation Pressure Warning as available on the VX, Altitude and Kakadu grades only. The GX and GXL go without.

There is a trap in that list for used buyers, and it is worth spelling out.

The Altitude did not have it at launch. Drive reported in February 2026 that tyre pressure monitoring was added to the Altitude from September 2025 production, having previously been limited to the cheaper VX and the dearer Kakadu. CarExpert's Prado buyer's guide from February 2025 lists only the VX and Kakadu, which lines up.

So a Prado Altitude built before roughly September 2025 probably doesn't have it, and one built after probably does. Two identical-looking cars on the same dealer lot, one with the feature and one without. Check the build date on the compliance plate, not the model year on the ad.

What it shows you, and what it doesn't

Toyota's own name for the feature points at a limitation. "Warning" is doing a lot of work in "Tyre Inflation Pressure Warning."

Structured specification databases reinforce this. The same databases that describe the Ranger XLT and MU-X LS-U systems as "tyre pressure monitoring, with logging/display" describe the Prado's as a "tyre pressure sensor" with no display qualifier. The distinction is applied consistently across four different manufacturers, which makes it a meaningful signal.

We could not confirm this against a Toyota owner's manual, so treat it as likely rather than certain. The Prado appears to give you a warning light rather than a pressure figure for each tyre. If you own one, dig through the instrument cluster menus and find out for yourself, because it changes how much use the system is to you.

What we can say with more confidence is that the spare isn't covered. Every Prado grade carries a full-size spare, and structured specification data lists it as a steel wheel against the alloy road wheels on the VX, Altitude and Kakadu. Toyota's own spec sheet says only "full size spare wheel" without naming the rim material, so treat the steel detail as likely rather than confirmed. Either way, a spare of a different specification to the road wheels is not carrying a matched factory sensor.

Prado 150 Series

Toyota Australia's specification sheet for the 150 Series, dated November 2023, contains no reference to tyre pressure monitoring or tyre inflation pressure warning on the GX, GXL, VX or Kakadu.

Fifteen model years of Prado, from 2009 to 2024, with nothing.

Toyota LandCruiser: the 300 Series and 70 Series

This is the finding that surprised us most, and we checked it harder than anything else in this article.

The 300 Series

The Australian-delivered LandCruiser 300 Series is not listed with tyre pressure monitoring on any grade. Not the GX, not the GXL, not the VX, not the Sahara, not the GR Sport, not the Sahara ZX. We checked every one.

We looked at Toyota Australia's LandCruiser 300 range and specifications pages, structured specification data for the GXL, Sahara, Sahara ZX and GR Sport, CarExpert's full equipment breakdown, Chasing Cars' coverage of the 2025 safety and technology update and the 2026 hybrid specifications, and Toyota Australia's own LandCruiser 300 accessories page. Seven independent sources. The feature does not appear in any of them, and Toyota does not offer it as an accessory either.

We want to be precise about what that means. This is absence of evidence rather than an explicit statement from Toyota saying the vehicle has none. But it carries real weight, because Toyota Australia's Prado specification page does list Tyre Inflation Pressure Warning where the feature exists. Same manufacturer, same spec template, same market. When Toyota fits it, Toyota lists it.

The 70 Series

Here the evidence is stronger, and it is negative.

Toyota Australia's own LandCruiser 70 Series specification table, dated 21 October 2025, contains no reference to tyre pressure monitoring or tyre inflation pressure warning anywhere in the document, on any grade. That is a current primary-source document from the manufacturer.

The 70 Series sold 11,561 units in Australia in 2025. The 300 Series sold roughly the same again.

What this means if you actually tour

Take a step back and look at what Toyota has done here.

A HiLux SR, the second-cheapest ute in the range, gets tyre pressure monitoring. A Prado VX gets it. A LandCruiser 300 Sahara, the vehicle Australians buy specifically because they intend to drive it a very long way from anywhere, does not appear to get it on any grade. Neither does the 79 Series that half the mining and pastoral industry runs on.

We are not going to pretend to know Toyota's reasoning. Global platform decisions, homologation timing and the 300's development cycle relative to the EU regulations all plausibly play a part.

What we can say is what it means for you. If you own a LandCruiser and you are heading somewhere remote, nothing on your dash is watching your tyre pressures. The vehicle will tell you when your fuel is low, when a door is ajar and when the AdBlue needs topping up. It will not tell you that your left rear has been leaking for the last eighty kilometres.

Isuzu MU-X

Credit where it is due. Of the five vehicles here, the MU-X has the best factory system, and it isn't close.

Which MU-X grades have it

Tyre pressure monitoring is standard on the LS-U, LS-T and X-TERRAIN. Isuzu UTE Australia's technology page states the availability verbatim: "(Standard on LS-U, LS-T & X-TERRAIN models)." The LS-M misses out.

Worth noting for the wheels-don't-predict-anything file: the LS-M rides on 17-inch alloys and still doesn't get it.

There is some bad information circulating on this point. At least one major automotive specification database has been read as showing the feature on every MU-X grade including the LS-M. That reading came from a multi-column PDF where the columns don't align cleanly, and it conflicts with Isuzu's own published availability note and with CarExpert's grade-by-grade breakdown, which lists tyre pressure monitoring under what "the LS-U adds." Go with Isuzu.

Why it's the best of the five

Isuzu's description of what the system actually does: "The system constantly monitors and reports individual tyre pressures and temperatures. When refilling your tyres, the vehicle will conveniently alert you once the correct pressure has been reached."

Three things in one sentence that the other four don't offer together.

It reports individual tyre pressures, so you get a figure per wheel rather than a single idiot light. It reports temperature, which matters more than most people realise, because a tyre that is running hot is often the first sign of trouble on a long towing day. And it tells you when you have hit the target while you are standing at the air hose, which removes the most annoying part of adjusting pressures.

That is a properly thought-through system. If you own an MU-X LS-U or above, you have something genuinely useful.

What it still can't do

None of that changes the two structural limits.

The LS-U carries a full-size steel spare against 18-inch alloy road wheels, so its spare isn't monitored. The LS-T and X-TERRAIN carry full-size alloy spares, and Isuzu's copy says "individual tyre pressures" without specifying a sensor count, so whether those grades include a fifth sensor is unverified. We couldn't confirm it either way.

And like every other factory system here, it stops at the tow ball. Hitch up a van and the MU-X will tell you nothing about the four or five wheels behind you.

One more quirk that explains a lot about why this information is so hard to find. Isuzu files tyre pressure monitoring under "Cabin Amenities" in its specification documents. Toyota files it under Safety on the HiLux and Instruments and Controls on the Prado. Ford files it under Instruments and Controls, Display. No wonder the aggregators can't keep it straight.

Why four manufacturers call it four different things

If you have been trying to answer this question for your own vehicle and getting nowhere, the terminology is probably why.

Toyota is inconsistent with itself, in the same market, across two vehicles built in the same year.

The practical consequence: if you search a specification sheet for "TPMS" you will get a false negative on three of these five vehicles. Search for the word "pressure" instead. It appears in every version of the name.

There is a second distinction hiding in that table. Ford's "with logging/display" wording describes a system that shows you readings. That phrasing gets applied to the Ranger XLT, the HiLux SR and the MU-X LS-U. It does not get applied to the Prado, which is described as a "tyre pressure sensor" with nothing after it.

It is also worth knowing that not every factory system reads actual pressure. Direct systems put a sensor inside each wheel and measure the air. Indirect systems infer pressure from wheel speed data borrowed from the ABS, on the logic that a soft tyre has a smaller rolling circumference and turns slightly faster. Ford's own documentation for the Focus describes exactly that approach.

An indirect system can never show you a number, because it never measures one. It also cannot watch a spare that isn't turning, and it certainly cannot watch a trailer. The systems in these five 4WDs are direct, but if you are cross-shopping other vehicles, it is a distinction worth asking about.

How to check your own vehicle in two minutes

Enough theory. Here is how to find out what you actually have.

Start with the build date, not the model year. Open the driver's door and read the compliance plate. The Prado Altitude example above is the reason this matters: two cars advertised as the same model year can differ on this feature depending on which month they were built.

Search the spec sheet for "pressure", never "TPMS". As the table above shows, three of these five manufacturers don't use the acronym. Searching for "pressure" catches every variant of the name.

Do the dash test. Turn the ignition to accessory without starting the engine and watch the instrument cluster during its bulb check. If the vehicle has TPMS, you will see the telltale flash up briefly: a horseshoe shape, flat on the bottom, with an exclamation mark in the middle. It looks like a cross-section of a tyre, because that is what it is. If it never appears, the system isn't there.

Find out whether it gives you a number. This is the difference between a system that tells you something useful and one that tells you it is already too late. Dig through the instrument cluster menus and look for a tyre pressure page listing all four wheels. If all you can find is a warning lamp, that is what you have.

Count the sensors. Get the spare out and look at the valve stem. A factory TPMS sensor sits inside the wheel with a distinctive metal valve stem, usually with a nut at the base, rather than the plain rubber stem you get on an unmonitored wheel. If the spare has a plain rubber stem, it isn't being watched.

Then read the owner's manual. Yours is the authority on your vehicle. Manufacturer specifications change mid-model-year without announcement, and that includes ours: this article was verified against manufacturer specification sheets in August 2026 and vehicles built after that date may differ.

What factory TPMS won't do

Everything up to this point has been reference material. This section is the argument, and it applies whether your vehicle has factory TPMS or not.

It can't see your caravan

No factory system on any of these five vehicles can monitor a trailer or a caravan.

Not the Ranger Wildtrak. Not the MU-X X-TERRAIN with its per-wheel temperature readouts. Not the HiLux Rogue. The system watches the four wheels the manufacturer sold you and stops at the tow ball.

If you tow, that is the wrong half of your rig. Your tow vehicle's tyres are the ones you look at every time you walk up to the car. The van's tyres sit under a heavy box that you can't see in your mirrors, often carry more load per tyre than the vehicle's, and are frequently older, because caravan tyres age out long before they wear out.

It probably can't see your spare

We have covered this vehicle by vehicle, but it is worth collecting in one place, because the pattern is consistent.

Ford states directly that fitting the spare makes the warning light flash on start-up and then stay on. The Prado and the MU-X LS-U carry full-size steel spares against alloy road wheels, which rules out a matched factory sensor. The one claim we found of a HiLux monitoring its spare is single-sourced and unconfirmed.

The spare is the wheel you are least likely to have checked and most likely to be running on when something has already gone wrong. Leaving it unmonitored is backwards.

It fights you when you air down

This is the one that turns owners against their factory systems.

FMVSS 138, the American rule that put TPMS in most of these vehicles, requires a warning when a tyre falls 25% or more below the placard pressure. That threshold is baked into the calibration.

Do the arithmetic on a 38 psi placard. The system stays quiet until 28.5 psi. That is a long way down, and by the time you get a light, a slow leak has had plenty of time to cook the sidewalls.

Now run it the other way. You pull up at the beach and drop to 18 psi for sand, which is exactly what you should do. Your factory system, which has no idea you have made a deliberate decision, lights up and stays lit. It will keep nagging you across the entire drive.

Allan Whiting of Outback Travel Australia, who has been testing this gear in the bush for years, put the problem plainly in April 2025. "The typical Australian 4WD needs to have its tyre pressures monitored across a wide range of pressures, ranging from as low as 16psi up to, maybe, 70 psi," he wrote. "Vehicle-manufacturer-fitted TPMS can't do that without considerable reprogramming for each individual pressure setting."

His observation about what owners actually do in response is the part worth sitting with: "Most people don't bother and simply ignore the TPMS light, or put a piece of sticky tape over it."

A safety system that gets taped over has stopped being a safety system.

Where factory systems genuinely earn their keep

We should be fair here, because there is a real case for them.

If you drive on sealed roads at consistent pressures, a factory TPMS does its job well. It is integrated, it has no batteries to replace, nothing can be stolen off your valve stems, it adds no mass to anything, and it needs no maintenance for the life of the vehicle. A slow puncture on the way to work will get flagged. For a lot of drivers that is the entire requirement.

The mismatch appears when the vehicle gets used the way Australians use these particular five: loaded up, hitched to something, pressures changed by hand at the start and end of every dirt road.

The placard problem: why hooking up changes your pressures

There is a second issue that has nothing to do with which grade you bought, and most owners have never had it explained.

What the placard actually guarantees

Your tyre placard is not a suggestion, but it is answering a narrower question than you think.

Under ADR 95/00, tyres fitted to passenger and goods vehicles have to suit the vehicle for dimensions, speed rating and load performance. The rule also caps how far a manufacturer can lean on pressure to get there: they "must not fit tyres that require a cold inflation pressure greater than 825 kPa for radial ply tyres and 700 kPa for other tyres, to achieve the manufacturer's rated 'GVM'."

So the placard is calculated to carry the vehicle at its maximum rated mass. That is genuinely useful. What it doesn't account for is what happens to the distribution of that mass when you put a tow ball into the equation, because a tow ball sits behind the rear axle and works as a lever.

What a tow ball does to your rear axle

The Australian weighing service GoWeigh published a worked example in February 2024 that illustrates this better than any explanation.

An unhitched tow vehicle measured 1,400 kg on the front axle and 1,600 kg on the rear. The same vehicle, hitched to a van with 240 kg of tow ball mass, measured 1,320 kg front and 1,920 kg rear.

Look at what happened. The rear axle gained 320 kg from a 240 kg tow ball. And 80 kg came off the front. The rear axle picked up 133% of the ball weight.

Two caveats before you take that number away. It is a single vehicle from a commercial weighing service, not a controlled study. And the multiplier depends on the wheelbase-to-overhang ratio, so a dual-cab ute with a long rear overhang will see a higher figure, not a lower one.

The point stands regardless. Hitch up a van with a 300 kg ball weight and you may be adding something like 400 kg to the rear axle, roughly 200 kg per rear tyre, while the tyres are still sitting at the pressure printed on a placard that was calculated for the vehicle on its own. Bridgestone Australia's guidance is direct about the fix: "Yes, in many cases you should increase your tyre pressure when towing a trailer, caravan or carrying heavy loads."

The all-terrain trap

Now the one that catches the most people, and it is entirely invisible.

Load capacity is a function of inflation pressure, not just tyre size. As the Tyre and Rim Association of Australia puts it, "tyre load capacity is directly affected by inflation pressure. As pressure decreases, the tyre's ability to carry load also decreases."

Here is what that looks like with real numbers from the Tire and Rim Association load and inflation tables. At 35 psi, an LT265/65R17 in single fitment carries 1,765 lb per tyre. At the same 35 psi, a P265/60R17 carries 2,205 lb.

Same nominal size. Same pressure. The light truck tyre carries about 20% less.

That is not a defect. LT-construction tyres are built with stiffer casings for higher pressures, and they will out-carry a passenger tyre comfortably once you inflate them properly, reaching 3,085 lb at 80 psi in Load Range E. Toyo states the principle directly in a 2012 technical bulletin: "size-for-size; LT-metric tires require higher air pressure to carry equivalent loads of P-metric tires, and that any failure to adjust air pressures to achieve the vehicle's load requirement will result in tire fatigue and eventual tire failure due to excessive heat build-up."

But think about the sequence most owners follow. They fit a set of LT all-terrains because they are heading bush. They keep running the placard pressure, because why would you change it. And they have quietly removed about a fifth of their load capacity at exactly the moment they started loading the vehicle up.

This works in the other direction too, and Australian law recognises it. VSB 14, the national code of practice for light vehicle modification, requires that when a light goods vehicle originally fitted with light truck tyres is converted to passenger car tyres, the replacement tyre load rating must be based on the highest individual wheel load multiplied by a service factor of 1.10.

One last thing on placards. If you have had a legitimate GVM upgrade, South Australia's mass re-rating rules require that where the upgrade exceeds the manufacturer's axle capacity, "a new placard must be fitted to the vehicle replacing the OEM placard." Plenty of upgraded rigs are still running the original.

One thing tyre pressure will not fix

We need to correct something you have probably read elsewhere, because getting this wrong undermines everything else.

Correct tyre pressure does not prevent caravan sway.

Experimental research by Darling, Tilley and Gao, published in the Proceedings of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, tested car-trailer high-speed stability directly. Their finding: "the dominant factors affecting stability were the trailer yaw inertia, nose mass (mass distribution), and trailer axle position." Pressure did register an effect, and in the helpful direction, but a small one: "the higher the tyre pressure, the larger is the damping, although the change is not very significant."

So pressure nudges stability. It does not govern it.

If someone tells you a TPMS will stop your van snaking, they are overselling it. Sway is a mass distribution and geometry problem, and you fix it with nose weight, load placement and a properly set up weight distribution hitch.

The real argument for correct pressure when towing is different, and it is a better argument anyway: load capacity, heat and structural failure. An overloaded, under-inflated tyre builds heat, and as Bridgestone's technical bulletin filed with NHTSA puts it, "heat damage to tires is cumulative and irreversible." That bulletin was written about commercial truck tyres, but the physics is not fussy about what the tyre is bolted to. You can't un-cook a tyre. The damage from one badly-set towing trip travels with you into the next one.

Worth one more note from that same research: it puts optimal nose mass at around 6 to 8% of caravan mass, which sits below the 10% of ATM figure repeated across most Australian towing advice.

What we won't tell you

Two things get asserted confidently online that we could not verify, so we are not going to repeat them.

Whether external sensors interfere with a factory system. We found no manufacturer statement, no technical service bulletin and no study saying they do or don't. What is documented is general radio-frequency behaviour: TPMS sensors transmit on one of two licence-free bands, around 315 MHz in North America and Japan or 433.92 MHz in Europe and Australia, and a vehicle's computer only accepts sensor IDs it has learned, which means an aftermarket sensor's data won't appear on your factory display and shouldn't be mistaken for a factory one. Trade guidance from Tire Review does advise keeping other sets of sensors away during a relearn procedure. Beyond that, anyone telling you definitively either way is going past the evidence.

Whether fitting one affects your warranty. The ACCC's guidance is that your consumer guarantee rights survive independent servicing, and no manufacturer statement exists about external TPMS specifically. The honest position: fitting an accessory doesn't extinguish your rights under Australian Consumer Law, but a fault caused by an accessory isn't the manufacturer's problem. That is not the same as "it can't void your warranty," and we won't pretend it is.

The downsides of external sensors, stated plainly

They add mass to your valve stem. The technical evidence here needs care. The International Tire and Rubber Association warned that metal valve extensions "should never be used" with the high-pressure TR600HP and TR801HP snap-in valves, because "the centrifugal force that is generated at high speeds by the added weight of the metal extension can break or crack the stem, causing it to unseat and result in a loss of air." Its broader rule was blunter: "Metal extensions are for metal clamp-in valve stems only." That guidance is about valve extensions rather than TPMS caps, and the association itself was folded into the Tire Industry Association back in 2002. The physics carries across to any added mass on a flexible stem, but we are not going to misquote it as though it were written about sensors. Roger Marble, a retired tyre design and forensic engineer who spent 40 years with a major manufacturer, recommends replacing rubber snap-in stems with metal bolt-in stems if you run external sensors, calling snap-ins "false economy given the metal bolt-in stems only cost $3 to $4 each." That was US pricing in 2020, but the point holds: it is cheap insurance. Standard rubber snap-in stems are rated to 65 psi, and metal clamp-in stems to 200 psi.

The locking rings are annoying. Sold as theft protection, and they do make a sensor harder to walk off with. Three separate Australian sources report the same practical complaint: they get in the way when you are airing up or down, and a service station air hose can struggle to seat properly over one. Owners on Oricom's own product Q&A ask whether they can run without them. If you air down regularly, this will bother you more than the theft risk will.

Batteries. Sensor batteries are consumable. Ours are user-replaceable CR1632 cells with a 12 to 18 month life depending on use, but it is a maintenance item that a factory system doesn't have.

Range. Sensors have to reach the display. That is a genuine constraint on a long rig, and we cover it below.

What aftermarket actually buys you

With all that on the table, the case is still strong, and NHTSA's numbers back the principle. Its evaluation of model year 2004 to 2007 vehicles found direct TPMS reduced the likelihood of severe under-inflation, meaning 25% or more below placard, by 55.6%, a weighted relative-risk estimate. Without TPMS, 23.1% of vehicles had at least one severely under-inflated tyre. With it, 11.8%. Monitoring changes outcomes, not just awareness.

The three things an aftermarket system does that no factory system on these five vehicles will:

It covers everything you're towing. Vehicle, van, spares, all on one display.

It works when you're parked. One of the recurring complaints in Australian reviews of competing systems is that sensors need the vehicle moving at 25 km/h or more before they report. That means no readings during your morning walk-around, which is exactly when you want them. How many sensors your rig actually needs

This is where most people get it wrong, and it is the easiest thing in the article to get right.

Count the wheels. Then count the spares. That is your number.

The common mistake is buying a four-sensor kit for a rig with eight wheels on the ground, then adding sensors later at retail. Count the whole rig before you buy.

Don't skip the spares. We know the argument against: the spare isn't turning, so it can't be doing anything. That misses the point. An unmonitored spare is a spare you have to trust blind, and you find out whether that trust was justified at the worst possible moment. It costs one sensor to know.

Check your rig length before you order. Our sensors transmit reliably over 7 to 8 metres. A HiLux at 5.5 metres towing an 8.8 metre van is over 14 metres from front sensor to rear. That needs a Signal Booster at $89, and we would rather tell you that upfront than have you discover it when the van sensors drop out at highway speed. Australian owners of competing systems regularly report exactly this problem, and describe the repeater as an unexpected extra cost. For most 4WD-plus-single-axle setups you won't need one. For anything over about 8 metres total, or if you have a lot of electronic gear in the van, plan for it.

Set different thresholds for vehicle and van. Your ute might run 38 psi. Your van might run 55 to 65 psi depending on its GTM and tyre rating. One alarm threshold across both is useless, because it will be either too loose for the vehicle or too tight for the van. Set them separately.

The wheels aren't the only thing that gets hot. Caravan wheel bearing failure is the other end of this problem, and it does not announce itself through tyre pressure. Frequently asked questions

Does the Toyota HiLux have tyre pressure monitoring?

On the new-generation HiLux that arrived in Australian showrooms in December 2025, tyre pressure monitoring is standard from the SR grade up, covering the SR, SR5, SR5+, Rogue and Rugged X. The WorkMate does not have it. No HiLux built between 2015 and 2025 has factory tyre pressure monitoring on any grade.

Does the Ford Ranger have a tyre pressure monitoring system?

The Next-Gen Ranger sold in Australia since 2022 has tyre pressure monitoring from the XLT grade up, including Sport, Wolftrak, Tremor, Wildtrak, Platinum and Raptor. The XL, XLS and Black Edition do not have it, despite the Black Edition having alloy wheels.

Does the LandCruiser 300 have TPMS?

The Australian-delivered LandCruiser 300 Series is not listed with tyre pressure monitoring on any grade, including the GX, GXL, VX, Sahara, GR Sport and Sahara ZX. Toyota Australia does not offer it as an accessory for the 300 either. The LandCruiser 70 Series also has none, confirmed in Toyota Australia's specification table dated October 2025.

Does the Prado have tyre pressure monitoring?

The Prado 250 Series has it on the VX and Kakadu grades, and on the Altitude from around September 2025 production. The GX and GXL do not have it. Toyota calls the feature "Tyre Inflation Pressure Warning" rather than TPMS, which is why searching the spec sheet for the acronym returns nothing. No Prado 150 Series has it.

Does the Isuzu MU-X have TPMS?

Tyre pressure monitoring is standard on the MU-X LS-U, LS-T and X-TERRAIN. The LS-M does not have it. Isuzu's system reports individual tyre pressures and temperatures and alerts you when a tyre reaches its target pressure during refilling, which makes it the most capable factory system among these five vehicles.

Is TPMS mandatory in Australia?

No. There is no Australian Design Rule requiring tyre pressure monitoring on any vehicle category, and ADR 95/00 explicitly does not apply to TPMS installation. Vehicles sold here that have it generally inherited it from United States requirements, mandatory since September 2007, or European ones, mandatory for passenger cars since November 2014.

Does factory TPMS monitor the spare tyre?

Generally no. Ford Australia states that fitting the spare wheel causes the warning light to flash at start-up and then stay illuminated. The Prado and MU-X LS-U carry full-size steel spares against alloy road wheels, which rules out a matched factory sensor. Aftermarket systems can monitor the spare if you buy a sensor for it.

Can my factory TPMS monitor my caravan's tyres?

No. No factory system on the HiLux, Ranger, Prado, LandCruiser or MU-X can monitor a trailer or caravan. Ford offers a factory trailer TPMS kit in North America but the Ranger is not on its compatibility list and no equivalent kit is listed in Australia.

Why does my tyre pressure light come on after airing down?

Factory systems compare your current pressure against a fixed placard baseline and warn when a tyre drops roughly 25% below it. Dropping to sand pressures of 16 to 20 psi from a 38 psi placard trips that threshold by design. The system cannot tell a deliberate air-down from a puncture, and you cannot clear the warning without re-inflating.

Can I add TPMS to a 4WD that didn't come with it?

Yes. Aftermarket systems fit any vehicle regardless of what the factory did or didn't include, and cover wheels no factory system reaches, including the spare and anything you tow. External screw-on sensors fit in about ten minutes with no wiring.

Will external TPMS sensors damage my valve stems?
